Wolfenstein 3D on the Apple IIGS

Spread the love

Me playing Wolfenstein 3D on a real Apple IIGS running at 10mhz with the help of a ZIPGSX card. Even at that speed, the game runs pretty slow in full screen mode. Luckily you can adjust the screen size to increase performance. You need at least 12.5mhz and 64k cache I’d guess to run it properly on a IIGS.

  1. Whoa, I had no idea of this port's existence! And it's freeware, too! And ported with the help of "Burger" Heineman. How have I not heard of this until now, haha.

Thanks for showing this! I'd been looking for something else to use with my Transwarp card.

  2. @BrianPicchi Mine goes up to 6.3MHz. It's a version 8H, revision 1.4x and I can't seem to find any information on this particular version of the Transwarp online. According to what sources I've found, most seemed to go up to only 3.58MHz.

Yeah, it's a very nice port and really showed off what such a limited system was capable of with the right guys writing the software (and maybe a little help with an accelerated CPU ๐Ÿ™‚ I need to increase mine a few more MHz to play this game smoothly in its full screen mode. One day…

  4. I've known about the IIGS for years and used them in the 90's at school, but i only very recently found out about this port of Wolfenstein 3D for the IIGS, I found out about it on the Apogee Software/3D Reams site of all places.

  5. Are you running the game off some kind of Compact Flash card adaptor or something? I don't hear the sound of a floppy disk drive or hard drive running in the background.

  6. 00:50 Intro Selection Part and 9:26 2nd.Mission Ending PERFECT!
R.I.P. SO GRATEFUL AND RESPECTFULLY OUR DEARS/MY DEAR STEVE JOBS ๐Ÿ™‚
GOD BLESS US ALL TILL THE END OF THE WORLD JUST LIKE THE FILMS SUCH AS "SEEKING A FRIEND BENEATH THE ROADS TO THE END OF THE WORLD" THIS IS IT! JUST LIKE THIS HOPEFULLY WISHES AS MINE STH LIKE THIS. AS IF ONLY, SEE YOU…

  7. Apple 2 GS's CPU, 65C816, was a 16-bit CPU but a rather poor one. It didn't have even the multiplication instructions. The actual speed of 10MHz 65C816 would be like 10MHz 80286 at best, probably worse. Wolfenstein 3D running on it is a kind of miracle.

  8. A) ESCAPE FROM CASTLE " WOLFENSTEIN " 3D/2D Excellent, Perfect, Marvellous!!

  10. I'm not familiar with this hardware… but a lot of those old computers had no real heat dissipation… could it be retrofitted with a heatsink / fan and overclocked?

Also, I know, at least for the Z80 (a completely different CPU), there are modern pipelined versions of the CPU that can execute 4x the instructions in the same amount of time (at the same clock speed as their 80s counterparts), is there an equivalent drop in replacement CPU for the 65xxx?

  11. Just thinking re IIGS, if the fastest CPU they can get is 18MHz, maybe they could use 2 together? I think the original 6502 left the bus alone on every other cycle, so you could run co-processors more easily. If the 65816 does the same, it might be possible. And rendering games like this would split well between any number of processors.

Failing that, FPGA implementation, the small ones aren't even really expensive. Should be enough for the tarted-up 6502 that the IIGS has.

  12. to cut short of the false informations the 65816 is a true 16 bits processor with a 16 bits ALU .
It also has a full 8 bits mode and a 8 bit bus to stay compatible with the 6502 serie(it was designed for this purpose),but it's native mode is 16bits .
Keep in mind that the 2gs must use a slow RAM part for video (for compatibility with apple 2),and even with a 300 mhz CPU, it must write into the "video ram" at 1mhz .
